This one is often attributed to Martin Gardner.How many dominoes would you require to fill up a 8x8 chess board?
Now, let us give vent to the suppressed child in us, and mangle the chess board by removing the opposite corner squares (see picture). How many dominoes would you require now?

According to Wikipedia, it is actually due to Gamow and Stern, although Gardner popularized it.
Yup, this one's a classic--for the full board you'd need 32 2X1 dominoes, but for the truncated board the problem is impossible unless we allow the dominoes to overhang the edge of the board: each domino that is completely on the board must cover a white and a black square, and so once the 30 remaining white squares are covered, along with 30 black ones, two black squares remain--there is no way to have a domino that covers two black squares.
By the way I'm glad to see this site is up and running again--I always enjoy new (or old) puzzles.
